"Maybe you should think about why you're so angry with me." Josie's voice came from the darkness surrounding her. "Good night, D.J. We'll talk again in the morning."

Josie watched D.J. sleep. The girl slept as stiffly as she livedflat on her back, arms straight at her sides, never tossing or turning. She gave Josie the willies. How on earth had a child of hers ended up this way?
Unable to stand the stillness any longer, Josie lifted one of D.J.'s arms and moved it so the girl's palm lay against her cheek. Then she eased D.J.'s head sideways. The girl mumbled and turned on her side, curling her legs up and cuddling against the pillow.
"So much better," Josie whispered as she allowed her fingers to tangle in D.J.'s short hair.
"Josie." A man's voice called her name.
"What?" She yanked away her fingers and looked up at the ceiling. "She looks like she belongs in a coffin. How can I teach the girl anything when she's such a stiff?"
"Never mind how she sleeps. I want to talk to you. Come to me."
Josie sighed. What could Raphael want already? She'd been on earth a mere day. With a last look at D.J., Josie closed her eyes, concentrated as Raphael had taught her, and went to meet the boss. When she opened her eyes Raphael was directly in front of her.
"What did I do wrong?" Josie asked.
"Nothing. But I've just learned new information I thought you should be made aware of. The threat to D.J.'s life has increased."
